• 2018 to 2020 (13th gen refresh) , Sorted out early 13th-gen issues, 5.0L V8 is rock-solid
• 2012 to 2014 (12th gen) , Proven platform, widely available, affordable

F-150 Model Years to Avoid

• 2015 to 2017 , First aluminum body years, some panel fit issues, 2.7L EcoBoost carbon buildup
• 2004 to 2006 , Spark plug ejection issues (5.4L), cam phaser problems

Most Common Complaints by Engine

5.0L Coyote V8

Generally very reliable. Some oil consumption complaints in early years. Tick noise is common but usually harmless.

3.5L EcoBoost

Powerful and efficient. Watch for timing chain issues in early models (2011 to 2013) and condensation/intercooler leaks.

2.7L EcoBoost

Carbon buildup on intake valves is the main concern. Regular maintenance (walnut blasting every 60-80k miles) prevents this.

What to Inspect Before Buying

1. Check for cam phaser noise on startup (5.0L)
2. Inspect for oil leaks around the turbo oil lines (EcoBoost)
3. Test the transmission , 10-speed should shift smoothly without hunting
4. Check for rust on frame and cab corners (especially northern trucks)
